How would you encourage Calgary’s children (and their parents) to choose active modes of transportation for travel to and from school?

Walking or biking to school is ideal for our children and communities.  It is important that the school board makes it easy and safe for families to chose active modes of transportation.

How would you work with parents and the City to provide safe routes to walk and bike to Calgary’s schools, including traffic safety measures in the vicinity of the schools themselves?

This can be done in several ways.  First, the Board should work effectively with City Council to ensure traffic issues are addressed (increased police presence, traffic routing, etc.).  Second, the Board should make healthy choices a priority for our schools by structuring school parking and travel paths to encourage increased foot and bike traffic.  Third, school should work with parents to give them the tools and assurance needed to make make active mode decisions for their children (e.g. use of school patrols, supports for walking school buses, safety education for students, etc.).
