How would you encourage Calgary’s children (and their parents) to choose active modes of transportation for travel to and from school?

How would you work with parents and the City to provide safe routes to walk and bike to Calgary’s schools, including traffic safety measures in the vicinity of the schools themselves?

I endorse a one hour course given at kindergarten, grade one and grade two teaching safe walking and biking practices and route selection. All schools work really hard concerning safety and make traffic issues within the school area a top priority. The City have spent a ton of money with bike paths and most schools are close to the connecting pathways. Most parents already have involved themselves in how their children get to school and back again, so if the question is asking how to involve parents, along with the City, in the larger issue of road safety, I believe individual school councils can have that mandate.
